The Botanical Gardens Will Brighten Your May!

Buffalo, NY The Botanical Gardens will brighten up your May as it blossoms with fun-filled events. To kick-off the month, the Gardens will be hosting the first REFRESH, REVIVE, REJUVENATE Girl’s Night Out Beauty Book event by Buffalo Spree Magazine on May 3, and opening Rachel, a photography exhibit which will be held in the Arcangel Gallery May 5-June 3. These exhibits will be complemented by other great events, which include: National Teacher Day on May 8, National Public Gardens Day and a special Medicinal Garden Feature on May 11, Mother’s Day Tea Cup Arrangement on May 12 and the Bonsai Show and The Great Plant Sale May 19-20.

Join us at the Gardens as Buffalo Spree magazine presents REFRESH, REVIVE, REJUVENATE on May 3 from 5:30pm-9:00pm.  Enjoy an evening of beauty, shopping and wearable art creations to refresh your senses!  This event features beauty, style, spa and retail merchants, a fashion art exhibition, a live DJ, silent auction, photo booth fun, cash bar and delicious eats from Curly’s Grill & Banquet Center – all benefiting the Gardens.  Tickets are $15 and are available by calling 716.783.9119 ext. 2202 or at www.buffalospree.com.  This event is sponsored by: Corto’s Salon & Seasons Spa, Curly’s Grill & Banquet Center, Tony Walker Body & Beauty and vitaminwater®.

Rachel is a 10-year-old girl whose exhibit is inspired by photography of plants and architecture from her surroundings, and this is her first exhibit!  She has received a first place award for her photographs at the Erie County Fair, and has also won first place in the Binational Tourism Alliance’s Doors Open Niagara Architage Contest for four years in a row. One of her most prized photographs is of the Botanical Gardens and it will be included in her exhibition. Her love and passion for nature photography makes the Gardens a natural fit for her artwork.  In the future she hopes to pursue careers in teaching and photography. This exhibit is open daily from 10:00am-5:00pm, May 5-June 3 and is included with Garden admission.

The Gardens will celebrate National Teacher Day on May 8 from 3:30-6:00pm to recognize and honor the noble profession of teaching. The Gardens will offer free admission to all teachers, in order to thank them for their hard work and devotion to learning. Teachers should bring their id badge, to enjoy a free tour, science demonstrations and more.

National Public Gardens Day is May 11.  This is a national day of celebration to raise awareness of America’s public gardens and their important role in environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation, and education in communities nationwide. Please join us at the Gardens from 10:00am-5:00pm on May 11 for $1 admission. Docents will also offer free mini-tours of the Gardens throughout the day!

A special Medicinal Garden Feature will also be held on May 11, from 10:00am-2:00pm, in honor of Arthritis Awareness and Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. With the help of the D’Youville College School of Pharmacy and Mercy Hospital, part of Catholic Health, the Gardens will offer enlightening presentations and displays about prevention, identification and treatment, in order to build educational awareness and prevention for arthritis and osteoporosis in our community. This special feature will also include plant displays from which current medications are derived and future medications are being researched. This feature is included with Garden admission which will be $1 on May 11.

The Mother’s Day Tea Cup Arrangement workshop will join families together to celebrate and honor their mothers on a day devoted to them. Kids, with an accompanying adult, are welcome to participate in creating customized fresh flower arrangements in tea cups as a unique gift for their mothers. This workshop is $30 for Garden members, $35 for non-members and will be held on May 12 from 11:00am-12:30pm.  This workshop requires pre-registration, and you can register online at www.buffalogardens.com or by calling 716.827.1584 ext. 291.

The Bonsai Show will be held May 19-20 from 10am-5pm. This is a unique show that brings together bonsai masters and novices to display their prized trees at their peak. This is a once a year exclusive event held at the Gardens to give both members and non-members the opportunity to see these meticulously manicured trees all in one location. Demonstrations and informal question and answer sessions will take place throughout the weekend. Bonsai plants will also be available for sale during the show.

The Bonsai Show is brought to you by the Buffalo Bonsai Society and the Botanical Gardens. Admission prices for this event are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors (55+) and students (13+ with ID), $5 for kids ages 3-12, and free for members and kids under 3!

The Great Plant Sale is the Gardens’ biggest sale of the year! Spruce up your yard, home and landscape with bright and healthy plants from the Botanical Gardens for this summer season. This annual plant sale will offer shoppers the opportunity to choose from a wide, unusual variety of plants.  Included in the sale will be colorful hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, ornamentals, many varieties of tropical plants, rare plants, deer resistant plants, shrubs and so much more! The Great Plant Sale will take place in the new Administration Building next to the Gardens and is free to the public.
