Survival Instincts

Age Range: Grades 3-8

Cost: $14 per student. One adult is admitted free per every five students, additional adults are required to pay regular admission prices.

Group Size: minimum of 15 students, maximum of 80 students per day.

Plants have managed to thrive throughout the world, even in the harshest environments! This field trip for grades three through eight explores the ways plants have adapted to survive in different places. Students will discover how plants have adapted to rainforests and deserts while planting a succulent to take home. They will also take a close look at carnivorous plants, some of the most uniquely adapted plants in the world! Admission to the Botanical Gardens, along with a self-guided scavenger hunt and time to explore our plant collections, is included.

This field trip supports the following NYS P-12 Science Learning Standards:

  • 3-LS4-3. Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

  • 3-LS3-2. Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.

  • 3-LS4-2. Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.

  • 3-ESS2-2. Obtain and combine information to describe climates in different regions of the world.

  • 4-LS1-2. Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

  • 5-LS2-1. Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.

  • 5-LS2-1. Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants (producers), animals (consumers), decomposers and the environment.

  • MS-LS1-5. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms.

  • MS-LS3-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variation of traits in a population increases some individual’s probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.
