P1. Aralia cordata ‘Sun King’

P1. Aralia cordata ‘Sun King’

Perennial
A statuesque shrub that will shine in your garden with a golden presence.  ‘Sun King’ has lush, golden-yellow leaves with dramatic 2’ spikes of tiny white flowers in summer  that attract honeybees. Birds love the deep reddish-purple berries that ripen in the fall.  If you have the space, this fast-growing plant will make a dramatic statement in your garden.

Aralia is a vigorous grower, forming a large clump of foliage which is deer resistant.  The plant’s stems and petioles are a dramatic dark purple against the golden-chartreuse color.  This cultivar is late to emerge from dormancy in the spring, so wait for it to show and consider underplanting it with early spring bulbs.  Find a location with consistent moisture and protection from the hottest sun.  A spot with a couple of hours of morning sun is ideal.

3-6’H, 3-6’W, part shade.  Attracts birds and bees. Deer resistant.
