Orchids to “Take Over” the Botanical Gardens this Winter

Buffalo, NY - The Botanical Gardens will be bursting with Orchids this winter season. The Orchids 2016 exhibit will run from January 23 through February 28, the bi-annual Orchid Show will take place February 27-28, a Medicinal Garden Feature will highlight National Heart Month on February 27, and an Orchid Sale will be held on March 5.

Orchids 2016, will celebrate the amazing orchid. This exhibit will take place daily January 23 through February 28 from 10am-5pm. Botanical Gardens’ horticulturists and the Niagara Frontier Orchid Society will come together to create large imaginative forms that will be full of lush greens and colorful orchids. The Botanical Gardens’ horticulture collection will serve as an amazing backdrop to this wonderful show and a large collection of cymbidiums and amaryllis will be included in many artistic surprises. Hundreds of additional orchids will be on display throughout the conservatory.

On the final weekend of Orchids 2016, an Award Winning Orchid Show will take place, February 27-28. Along with the Niagara Frontier Orchid Society, the Botanical Gardens will host this popular annual orchid showcase from 10am-5pm and February 28 from 10am-3pm. Dozens of hand-picked and award winning orchid exhibits will be dispersed throughout the Botanical Gardens for visitors to enjoy. For those who want to expand their orchid knowledge, educational programs will be held both days on growing orchids and other aspects of indoor orchid gardening. During the show, orchids and supplies will be for sale through local vendors.

The Niagara Frontier Orchid Society’s mission is to seek to promote the culture and enjoyment of orchids, and aims to further every member’s orchid related knowledge. They are dedicated to encouraging the protection of orchids and their conservation in natural habitats around the world. Because February is National Heart Month, there will be a special Medicinal Garden Feature during the Orchid Show on February 27 from 10am-2pm. Activities include: botanical displays highlighting the plant sources for medications used to treat medical conditions related to the heart and cardiovascular system, blood pressure education and screenings. Catholic Health’s Mission on the Move team will provide health screenings. The Medicinal Garden is sponsored by Mercy Hospital of Buffalo along with the D’Youville College School of Pharmacy.

All types of orchids from the exhibits and the Botanical Gardens’ collection will be on sale to the public, while supplies last, on March 5 from 10am-4pm. Don’t miss your chance to take a gorgeous orchid home at great prices. The sale is free to the public and will be held in the Administration Building next to the Botanical Gardens.

Tickets for Orchids 2016, the Orchid Show and Medicinal Garden Feature can be purchased at the door and prices are; $9 for adults, $8 for seniors (55+) and students (13+), $5 for kids 3-12, Garden Members and kids two and under are free. The Orchid Sale on March 5 is free to the public and will be held in the Administration Building next to the Botanical Gardens.
