Art, Horticulture and Yoga Programs to be Held at the Botanical Gardens

Buffalo, NY - The Botanical Gardens is an inspiring place to learn about art, horticulture and wellness. Beginner, Intermediate, and Studio Watercolor classes will be offered in several different sessions beginning September 4.  Horticulture Certificate Series, Horticulture I, starting September 8 and Horticulture II beginning October 27 will also be offered this fall.  Two sessions of Yoga, Gentle Hatha and Gentle Power Flow, will be offered for a fall session beginning September 12.

Adult watercolor classes, held at the Botanical Gardens, are taught by professional artist Joan Saba.  Her talent is exceptional and her hands-on teaching style caters to all skill levels. Beginner Watercolor classes include introductory techniques and concepts.  Students will learn the basics of how to paint with watercolors and build foundational skills. Tuesday morning sessions will be held from 8:45-11:15am and will include: BM1 - September 4, 11, 18, 25; BM2 - October 2, 9, 16, 23; BM3 - October 30, November 13, 27, December 4.  Wednesday evening sessions will be held from 5:45-8:15pm and will include: BE1 - September 5, 12, 19, 26; BE2 - October 3, 10, 17, 24; BE3 - November 7, 14, 28, December 5.  Intermediate Watercolor classes are for students with previous experience, are more confident in their abilities and are ready to move beyond the basics.  Sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:45-7:45pm and will include: IE1 - September 4, 11, 18, 25; IE2 - October 2, 9, 16, 23; IE3 - October 30, November 13, 27, December 4.  Studio Watercolor classes  are for students confident in their artistic ability. Students bring paintings in progress for advised instruction and feedback. Studio classes will be held Monday mornings from 8:45-10:45am. Sessions include SM1 - September 10, 17, 24 and October 1; SM2 - October 15, 22, 29, November 5; SM3 - November 12, 26, December 3, 10.

Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. Beginner Watercolor classes are $76 per series or $19 per class for the general public and $68 per series or $17 per class for Botanical Gardens’ members. Intermediate and Studio Watercolor classes are $68 per series or $17 per class for the general public and $60 per series or $15 per class for Botanical Gardens’ members. David Clark, Horticulturist and CNLP, returns to the Botanical Gardens to teach enlightening Horticulture Certificate Programs, Horticulture I and II.  David is a dynamic instructor with a wealth of knowledge. He is fast becoming one of the country’s noted garden speakers. His classes are very popular as he conveys subject matter with infectious enthusiasm. These classes are great for beginners who would like to learn more about gardening as well as for experts looking to refine their skills.

Horticulture I includes six classes and topics in this series include: Botany 101 on September 8; Plant Propagation on September 15; Pest Management and Disease on September 29; Shrubs and Trees (includes a tree tour) on October 6; Annuals and Perennials on October 13 and Garden Design on October 20.  Horticulture II also includes six classes and topics in this series including: Soil Science for Gardeners on October 27; Advanced Propagation Techniques on November 3; Getting Started With Hydroponics on November 17; Water Gardening and Aquascaping on December 1; How to Prune Plants on December 8 and Introduction to Landscape Design on January 5. 

Classes will be held Saturdays from 11:00 am-1:00 pm and participants are welcome to enroll in a full series for a certificate or for individual classes to brush up on skills.  Classes are held in the Administration Building located on the Botanical Gardens’ campus.  Tuition for Horticulture I and II are $138 per series or $23 for individual classes for the general public and $108 per series or $18 for individual classes for Botanical Gardens’ members. Find balance both mentally and physically at yoga held inside the Botanical Gardens. These sessions are led by Leanne Oldenbrook owner of Oasis Yoga and Wellness and yoga instructor for 13 years. Gentle Hatha Yoga consists of gentle stretches to warm up joints and muscles, postures designed to increase strength, flexibility and balance, and time for relaxation and meditation. This class is suitable for all levels but especially students with injuries or limitations. Gentle Power Flow Yoga, a more vigorous practice featuring relaxation, warm up stretches, series of sequences, and Pilates postures designed to build strength, endurance, and body heat. 

Both sessions of yoga will be offered Wednesday evenings.  Gentle Hatha Yoga will run from 5:30- 6:45 pm and Gentle Power Flow Yoga will take place 7:00-8:15 pm. The fall session is a ten-week session and will be held September 12, 19, 26, October 3, 10, 17, 24, November 7, 14, 28.  Yoga at the Botanical Gardens is sponsored by Mercy Hospital, part of Catholic Health.

Students may enroll in a full session or individual classes.  The fall ten-week session is $100 for the full series or $15 per class.  Yoga classes are free to eligible BlueCross BlueShield of WNY members.
