Buffalo, NY - The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announced they will offer virtual watercolor painting classes this winter and spring including: Watercolor I-Foundations, Watercolor II-Beginner Techniques, Watercolor III-Advanced Beginners, Watercolor IV-Intermediate Expression and Watercolor V-Masters. These series of classes will be held online, via ZOOM so anyone, anywhere can participate, and will be taught by the Botanical Gardens' talented artist educators, Judith Kosinski and Deanna Weinholtz.

Watercolor I-Foundations is an approachable series of classes that explores watercolor painting materials and basic techniques that will help build an excellent foundation to master this inspiring and expressive form of painting. Watercolor I will be offered in two sessions: Tuesday mornings from 9:00am to 11:00am, February 9 through March 2 and Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, February 10 through March 3.  Little to no painting experience is required to participate in Watercolor I, taught by Judith Kosinski.

Watercolor II-Beginner Techniques will be offered weekly on Tuesdays from March 9 through March 30 from 9:00am to 11:00am.  Participants will learn the basic techniques of how to paint with watercolors. As students advance through this creative and exciting series, they will watch their painting skills grow by strengthening their skills in composition and color theory.  This class is suitable for beginners with little to no experience with watercolor painting and is also taught by Judith Kosinski.

Watercolor III-Advanced Beginners is an exciting step on an artistic watercolor journey. This series will be co-taught by Judy Kosinski and Deanna Weinholtz. Judy will start out the first two weeks, continuing painting exercises to advance participants’ skills, then as the series progresses, Deanna will take you through the last two classes. During the last two weeks, participants will build skills in wet on wet watercolor to create a beautiful sky with clouds. This is a perfect class to help lead budding painters into the Intermediate Watercolor level. Completion of Watercolor l and ll or a comfortable level of experience painting with watercolor is required for these classes.  Watercolor III will take place on Tuesday mornings from 9:00am to 11:00am April 13 through May 4.

Watercolor IV-Intermediate Expression will be offered in three, four-week sessions on Tuesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  The first session, Trees, Trees and More Trees will be held weekly February 2 through February 23.  Participants will learn several different techniques to create several different varieties of trees. Using wet in wet and wet in dry, watercolor students will experiment with a palette knife, credit card, sponge, toothbrush, spray bottle and a variety of brushes to create birch trees, oak trees and many others. Warmer Days Ahead will take place weekly from March 2 through March 23.  This watercolor class will have everyone dreaming of warm nights sitting by a lake watching a warm, intense sunset. Students will learn how to create a gorgeous sunset reflected in the water and silhouette the surrounding trees and dock.  Nature’s Textures will be the third session and will be held weekly April 13 through May 4. This class is a perfect way to celebrate spring while learning how to create all of the beautiful textures in nature. Participants will explore how to create textures in tree bark, leaves and different types of grasses. These new skills will help to paint a trillium flower that has grown in the middle of tree bark. Watercolor IV is suitable for anyone with some previous watercolor painting experience who would like to move beyond the basics as well as students who have completed Watercolor III.  Watercolor IV will be taught by Deanna Weinholtz.

Watercolor V-Masters will be offered in three, four-week sessions on Wednesday mornings from 9:00am to 11:00am. Participants will focus on landscapes or seascapes created in watercolor from their own photos that inspire them or one the instructor supplies. Students will utilize advanced watercolor techniques such as wet in wet, wet in dry, and glazing to create textures and depth within a refined composition. The first session, Mirrored Reflections will be held weekly February 3 through February 24. This watercolor class will answer those questions of how to add sparkle to water and make it look like a mirror image. Wet in wet as well as wet in dry techniques, glazing, and textural effects will be used to create reflections, sparkle and excitement. Coastal Surf will take place weekly from March 3 through March 24. In this series, participants will create waves crashing on rocks in a coastal surf using a fun technique of watercolor pencils and watercolor paints with brushes. Splattering paint and loosing up painting techniques will result in a stunning masterpiece. The third series, Creekside Walk will take place weekly from April 14 through May 5. Participants will take a beautiful journey along a creek of water, rocks and trees that will bring many exciting challenges to a watercolorist. This Masters class will explore how to capture the shimmer of light through water and create your own masterpiece. We will utilize advanced techniques to create shadows, depth and texture within your watercolor painting. Participants should have a working knowledge of color theory and design elements as well as intermediate to advanced watercolor painting experience. Watercolor V will be taught by Deanna Weinholtz.

Watercolor I through Watercolor V classes are suitable for anyone ages 16 or older and the cost of each series is $78.00 for the general public and $72.50 for members of the Botanical Gardens. In order to maintain the safest environment possible, each workshop will be offered online via ZOOM.  All classes are recorded and are available for one week after the class.
