Unique Workshops and Arbor Day Activities Announced at the Botanical Gardens

Erin Grajek

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens offers a wide variety of programs and workshops throughout the year. This spring, the Botanical Gardens will hold a Kokedama Hanging Garden Workshop on April 6, two Hypertufa Container Workshops on May 13, and a Beginning Bonsai Workshop on April 27 and 28.  In celebration of Arbor Day 2017, the Botanical Gardens will host Arbor Day Tree Tours on April 28 and 29 and an Arbor Day Tree Planting on April 28.

Due to popular demand, the Kokedama Hanging Garden Workshop returns this spring on April 6 at 6:00pm. Kokedama is a form of Japanese garden art that relates to the practice of bonsai. It is a hanging moss ball that includes a sculpted tree or plant. Participants will create their own unique and artistic hanging garden using a fun plant, mosses, a packed soil mixture and string. Participants should be prepared to get messy, bring their own work/gardening gloves and a box to transport their creation home. Workshop pricing for Botanical Gardens’ members is $45 and $50 for the general public.

The Hypertufa Container Workshop will be held on May 13 at 9:00am and 1:00pm.  Hypertufas are very popular in the gardening scene. They are planters made from aggregates bonded together using Portland cement and can be molded into any shape or size. They are unique planting containers that are porous and a great environment for plant growth. In this workshop, participants will create their own hypertufa from peat moss, Portland cement and perlite. This is a messy workshop and organizers ask participants to wear appropriate clothing.  Participants must also bring one container to mold their hypertufa, no larger than 12 inches by 16 inches. All materials to make the planter will be provided. Workshop pricing for Botanical Gardens’ members is $25 and $30 for the general public.

The Beginning Bonsai Workshop is a hands-on workshop that is one of a kind. Participants will manipulate live bonsai trees while learning the art of bonsai with representatives from the Buffalo Bonsai Society. On both April 27 and 28, the workshop will be held from 6:00-9:00pm. Organizers suggest that participants bring gardening gloves and a large box to transport their bonsai home. Space is limited in each session and all materials will be provided. Workshop pricing for Botanical Gardens’ members is $75 and $80 for the general public.

Celebrate Arbor Day with Arbor Day Tree Tours on April 28 at 4:00pm and April 29 at 9:30am and an Arbor Day Tree Planting on April 28 at 3:30pm. The tours will take guests on a walk through the Botanical Gardens’ arboretum to visit trees in the collection.  Participants will also learn the basics of tree identification.  In celebration of Arbor Day 2017, members of the Botanical Gardens’ staff and volunteer family will plant a new tree for their Arboretum’s collection. The walks and tree planting will take place outdoors, rain or shine.  It is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes to participate. The walks are $10 for both Botanical Gardens’ members and the general public. The tree planting is free and open to the public.
