Unique Workshops Announced at the Botanical Gardens

Erin Grajek

Buffalo, NY - The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens offers a wide variety of workshops throughout the year. This spring, the Botanical Gardens will hold a Tropical Glass Terrarium Workshop on March 5, the Fresh Spring Floral Arrangement on April 7 and 8, a Beginning Bonsai Workshop on April 22 and 23, a Hypertufa Container Workshop on May 9 and a Succulent Garden Workshop on June 4.

The Tropical Glass Terrarium Workshop will be held on March 5 from 6:00-8:00pm. Participants will each build a terrarium with tropical plants like those found in the Botanical Gardens’ collection.  This workshop is a great friend get-together and a fun night out.  Organizers ask that participants bring gloves and a box for transporting your creation.  Space is limited in this workshop and all materials will be provided. The cost for this workshop is $25 for the general public and $20 for Botanical Gardens’ members.

The Fresh Spring Floral Arrangement Workshop has been added to the Botanical Gardens’ workshop schedule by popular request!  Participants can choose from one of two dates, April 7 or 8, at 6:00pm.  Participants will create a lovely and fragrant display for their home or holiday table.  Led by an expert, this is a hands-on, guided workshop that requires no previous arranging experience.  Space is limited in each session and all materials will be provided. Organizers ask that participants bring a box to transport your arrangement and hand clippers. The cost for this workshop is $45 for the general public and $40 for Botanical Gardens’ members.

The Beginning Bonsai Workshop is also a hands-on workshop that is one of a kind. Participants will manipulate live trees while learning the art of bonsai with representatives from the Buffalo Bonsai Society. Choose from April 22 or 23, the workshop will be held from 6:00-9:00pm. Organizers suggest that participants bring gardening gloves and a large box to transport their bonsai home. Space is limited in each session and all materials will be provided. Workshop pricing is $80 for the general public and $75 for Botanical Gardens’ members.

The Hypertufa Container Workshop will be held on May 9 at 9:00am and 1:00pm. Hypertufas are very popular and are lots of fun to make. They are planters made from aggregates bonded together using Portland cement and can be molded into any shape or size. They are unique planting containers that are porous and a great environment for plant growth. In this workshop, participants will create their own hypertufa from peat moss, Portland cement and perlite. This is a messy workshop and organizers ask participants to wear appropriate clothing.  Participants must also bring one container to mold their hypertufa, no larger than 12 inches by 16 inches. All other materials to make the planter will be provided. Workshop pricing for the general public is $30 and $25 for Botanical Gardens’ members.

The Succulent Garden Workshop, held on June 4 at 6:00pm, is a great way to gather friends for a fun hands-on experience. Participants will design a small succulent container garden while discovering exciting, low-maintenance succulent plants. Participants can choose from a variety of miniature succulents that come in many unique forms and add some creative touches for their new succulent garden. Organizers suggest bringing gardening gloves. All materials will be provided. Workshop pricing for the general public is $25 and $20 for Botanical Gardens’ members.
