The General Program

The Botanical Gardens offers a variety of programs for both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Our general program includes a tour of the Gardens along with a hands-on lesson. The general program lasts one hour and can be tailored to suite different ages and abilities.

Cost for General Program: $8 per Scout
One adult is admitted free for every 10 scouts. Additional adults are required to pay Gardens admission.

Hands-On Options
Terrarium– Scouts will create individual sealed gardens to take home. They will build and understanding of plant care, growth, and anatomy. Scouts will also learn about the water cycle and its relation to plants and the rest of the planet.

Desert Dish– Scouts will build their own desert garden to take home. They will learn all about the desert biome and the different ways plants have adapted to survive in different climates.

The Badge Requirement Program

In addition to our general scout program, the Botanical Gardens offers additional badge programs for Girl Scouts. These programs fulfill some or all of the requirements for both general and skill building badges. All programs are two hours long and include a tour of the Gardens along with hands-on activities.

Cost for Badge Requirement Programs:  $10 per Scout

Use Resources Wisely - Daisy Clover Petal

Girls will gain an understanding of what it means to use our planet’s resources wisely. Topics include recycling, responsible water use, as well as the importance of working with others. This program fulfills all badge requirements and includes four stations:

- Mini-Tour of the Botanical Gardens                                         
- Recycling Challenge
- Story Time      
- Terrarium

Brownie Outdoor Art Creator Badge

Girls will explore the different ways nature can be used in art. This program satisfies all but one requirement for the Brownie badge and includes four stations:

- Mini-Tour of the Botanical Gardens                                          
- Desert Dish
- Plant Rubbings                                                               
- Rain Sticks

Brownie Bugs! Badge

Learn all about bugs with this badge. Girls will learn about beneficial insects, pollinators and native plants as well as the differences between bugs, insects and spiders. This program satisfies all but one requirement for the Brownie badge and includes four stations:

- Mini-tour of the Botanical Gardens
- Wildflower Seed Bombs
- Spider Craft
- Bug Hotel

 

Junior Flower Badge

Girls will learn all about the science of flowers while making some wonderful flower creations to take home. This program satisfies all of the requirements for the Junior badge and includes four stations:

- Mini-Tour of the Botanical  Gardens
- Terrarium
- Flower Code
- Dried Flower Art

Junior Gardener Badge

Girls will gain an understanding of what it takes to help plants grow and how to design a garden. This program satisfies all of the requirements for the Junior badge and includes four stations:

- Mini-Tour of the Botanical Gardens                                          
- Desert Dish
- Seed Experiment            
- Garden Design               

Cadette Breathe Badge

With the activities for this badge, girls will learn about how plants can help clean the air around us, learn about plants and essential oils and take home some air-purifying house plant cuttings to take care of. This program fulfills most requirements for the Cadette badge and includes three stations:

- Mini-tour of the Botanical Gardens
- Houseplant Cuttings
- Essential Oil Bath Salts

Cadette Tree Badge

For this badge, girls will explore our Level 2 Accredited Arboretum. Topics include tree identification and nature journaling. This program fulfills all requirements for the Cadette badge and includes three stations:

- Tree Tour
- Scientific Nature Journaling
- Tree Craft

  

New!  Botanical Overnights!

For the first time, the Botanical Gardens will be hosting sleepovers for scout groups! Come explore the Botanical Gardens in the dark with a nighttime scavenger hunt, snacks, games, and a movie. Choose from a variety of hands-on activities or add on a badge requirement program. Prices and times vary, please contact the Education Department for further details.

Program Overview
Spend time in the Botanical Gardens at night! Campers begin the evening by staking out a camping spot in the multi-purpose room of our Administration Building.
Campers then participate in a planting activity and search for plants in the Botanical Gardens; Collection with a flashlight on a fun scavenger hunt.

Before snuggling in for the night with a nature-themed movie, we provide each camper with a snack while playing a game in the Main Palm Dome. In the morning, after packing up their campsite, campers and chaperones will be served a continental breakfast in the Botanical Gardens. After breakfast, there will be time to explore in the morning light, before we open to the public.

What to Bring
* Each camper should bring a sleeping bag suited for the weather. You will be sleeping on a hard floor, so you may wish to bring a foam pad or air mattress.
* Make sure to bring a water bottle, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a flashlight.
* Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Shoes must be worn at all times in the Botanical Gardens.
*The temperature in the greenhouses fluctuates, so it is best to wear loose fitting clothes that can be layered i.e., shorts and t-shirt under sweats.
*Also keep in mind that we will be walking outside between buildings through the course of the program.

Cost
Chaperone Requirement: 1 adult chaperone required for every 5 campers.
Our Overnight Package starts at $1,020 for up to 30 campers and 6 adult chaperones. Additional campers are $30 each with a maximum of 40 total campers.
Additional adult chaperones are $20 each.

Add-On Scout Badge Program
Spend the morning after the overnight with us and work on the requirements needed to complete a badge at a discounted rate. Badge programs will take place Saturday morning from 9:30am-11:00am.
$160 for up to 20 scouts and 2 adults, $8 per additional scout or adult chaperone.

Overnight Badge
Botanical Overnight iron-on patches are available for purchase to commemorate your group’s adventure.
