This exciting field trip for students in first and second grade explores where our fruits and vegetables come from. Students will learn to identify the different parts of the plant and their functions. They will also discover what plants need to grow and how to care for them while planting edible herb seeds to bring home. Admission to the Botanical Gardens, along with a self-guided scavenger hunt and time to explore our plant collections, is included.

This field trip supports the following NYS P-12 Science Learning Standards:

  • 1-LS1-1. Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

  • 2-LS2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

  • 2-LS2-2. Develop a simple model that illustrates how plants and animals depend on each other for survival.

  • 2-LS4-1. Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.
