P3. Baptisia ‘Lemon Meringue’

P3. Baptisia ‘Lemon Meringue’

Perennial - Hot Pick
‘Lemon Meringue’ is a vigorous plant with an upright vase-shaped mound of beautiful blue-green foliage and long stems that hold lemon-yellow flowers in late spring to early summer. The bright lupine-like flowers make an eye-catching display in contrast to the dark charcoal-colored stems. Ornamental seed pods last into the fall. Baptisia will give a long display of brilliant color.

Baptisia is easy to grow, drought tolerant, and requires little maintenance.  This variety has compact, well-branched foliage.  Baptisia is extremely long-lived and forms a good-sized shrub-like plant, so choose a site where it will have room to show off its spiky architectural form.  Cut back to 4-6” in the fall when the foliage blackens with frost.  Use in a meadow planting, as a backdrop in borders, or as a specimen plant.  Pair with a silver Artemisia or a blue Veronica for a beautiful color combination.

3’H, 3’W, full sun to part shade. Attracts butterflies. Deer resistant.
