Summer Exhibits Announced at the Botanical Gardens

Andy Grinsfelder

Buffalo, NY - This summer take a trip to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens for fun and exciting exhibits! Starting off the season will be the Bonsai Show June 2 through June 3 from 10am-5pm. The Garden Railway Exhibit follows, June 9 through July 8 from 10am-5pm. June 10 is the Hosta Show from 10am-4pm. Also, the Botanical Gardens will be showcasing a new exhibit, Nature’s Kaleidoscope, taking place June 16 through August 19 from 10am-5pm. You will not want to miss out!

The art form of bonsai is derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, in part redeveloped by Japanese Zen Buddhism. It is a tradition that has been passed on for centuries, which is why the Botanical Gardens celebrates the beauty of bonsai. Join the Buffalo Bonsai Society June 2 through June 3 for their annual Bonsai Show. Talk with experts and beginners as they display amazing bonsai specimens from their personal collections. Demonstrations on live trees, the opportunity to purchase starter plants, accent plants and pots, as well as a raffle bonsai round out the activities for the weekend.

All aboard the Botanical Gardens express, as summer continues, with the Garden Railway Exhibit June 9 through July 8.  This exhibit is brought to you by the Western New York Garden Railway Society, an organization founded over 15 years ago by friends who shared a love for trains. They have grown considerably over the years in part for their exquisite and striking train models. The railway will bring fun and whimsy to the summer season, and people of all ages can enjoy this tradition. Take the train to the Botanical Gardens this summer!

Hostas are America’s favorite perennial, and because they are grown and exhibited more for their diverse foliage than their flowers, it is difficult to exhibit the whole plant. The Botanical Gardens take pride in the delicacy of the hosta, which is why the Western New York Hosta Society is hosting the annual Hosta Show on June 10.  They are a dedicated group of diverse individuals located in Western New York who enjoy the world of hosta and shade gardening. The event consists of hosta lovers showing single, well groomed, leaves in vases.  Hundreds of leaves that differ in size, shape, form and color will be on show. These will be judged the previous day by Master Judges from North Eastern USA and then displayed in large groups. Troughs, trays and pots, artfully planted with small hostas and companion plants, will be displayed as well.  A new feature on display this year will be artistic flower arrangements with hosta leaves incorporated!

Nature’s Kaleidoscope, on display June 16 through August 19, is a completely new theme for this colorful summer exhibit!  Our talented exhibit team has come up with some kaleidoscope inspired display pieces that will incorporate hexagonal and leaf patterns on glass and other surfaces. Visitors can plan to marvel at the innovative interpretations of kaleidoscopes throughout the Botanical Gardens along with some creative and interactive surprises. Nature’s Kaleidoscope is sponsored by Buffalo-NiagaraGardening.com.

All exhibits are included with Botanical Gardens’ admission, $11 adults, $10 seniors (62+), $9 students (13+ with ID), $6 kids 3-12, Botanical Gardens’ members and kids 2 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased online at buffalogardens.com or inside the Botanical Gardens at the admission desk.
